Your Context is Too Meta!
I recently discovered something unsettling while building a data abstraction layer with AI assistance. The abstraction was meant to restrict sensitive data before passing it to an AI model - standard security practice. But the AI coding assistant started following the rules it was helping me write, transforming dates in its own responses according to restrictions that existed only in unexecuted code. The server had never even been started.
Let that sink in. The AI was voluntarily enforcing security rules from code it was reading, not running.
This isn't just a quirky AI behavior - it's a security consideration that could impact your development process. When an AI model absorbs rules from your codebase context, you get unpredictable behavior:
False confidence: Your AI assistant following security rules might make you think your abstraction layer is working when it isn't even running
Inconsistent application: The next conversation won't have the same context, so the AI won't follow the same rules
Context leakage: If the AI can absorb security rules, what other patterns from your codebase might be influencing its suggestions?
The core issue is that language models don't distinguish between "code that defines behavior" and "behavior I should exhibit." Your abstraction layer becomes part of the AI's worldview for that conversation.
How to Prevent Context Contamination
If you're using AI to develop security features or data abstraction layers, here's how to maintain clear boundaries:
1. Isolate Security Development Keep security-critical code development in separate conversations from general coding tasks. Don't mix abstraction layer implementation with feature development in the same context.
2. Use Explicit Context Markers When working on security rules, explicitly tell the AI:

3. Test with Fresh Context Always validate your AI's behavior in a new conversation without the abstraction code in context. If it still applies the transformations, you have a problem.
4. Separate Documentation from Implementation Write your security documentation separately from your implementation conversations. This prevents the AI from conflating "how the system should work" with "how I should respond."
5. Use Concrete Examples with Clear Boundaries Instead of discussing abstract rules, use specific test cases:

The Real Lesson
This phenomenon reveals something crucial about AI-assisted development: context is powerful and can blur the lines between code and behavior. While it's fascinating that AI models can understand our code deeply enough to role-play its behavior, this same capability can create confusion and false security assumptions.
The meta-behavior I discovered - where an AI follows rules from unimplemented code - is a reminder that our tools are becoming sophisticated enough to surprise us. They're not just parsing our code; they're trying to understand and embody our intent.
As we build more complex systems with AI assistance, we need to be intentional about context boundaries. Your AI assistant shouldn't be your first test user for security features. It knows too much about what you're trying to do, and it's too eager to help by playing along.
Keep your contexts clean, your boundaries explicit, and always remember: just because your AI is following your security rules doesn't mean your system is secure. The most meta code is often the most misleading.
